The 12th Annual Camp Open Arms returned to Camp Running Bear in Monkton, Maryland on July 27, 2026, bringing another unforgettable week of fun, friendship, and adventure to children with limb differences.
This year’s theme was Candy Land, transforming the camp into a colorful world filled with games, activities, and sweet surprises. One of the most memorable moments of the week came when volunteers launched candy high into the air using a pneumatic candy cannon, creating a spectacular shower of treats that rained down on delighted campers below.
Founded by Dr. Joshua Abzug of the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital, Camp Open Arms has grown from a small gathering of children into a nationally recognized program that serves families from across the region. The camp was created to provide children with limb differences a safe and supportive environment where they can try new activities, make friends, and build self-confidence while simply enjoying the experience of being a kid.
Members of St. Ignatius Council 9729 once again volunteered their time to support the camp and help create an experience the campers will remember for years to come.
The smiles, laughter, and excitement generated by the Candy Land theme—and especially the candy cannon—made this year’s camp another remarkable success. More importantly, Camp Open Arms continued its mission of helping children discover that their differences do not define their potential.
St. Ignatius Council 9729 is grateful for the opportunity to support such an inspiring program and looks forward to helping again in the years ahead.
